Explanation

According to the 2017-2021 American Community Survey, 17,771 (16%) Thurston County households speak a language other than English at home, and 2,299 (2%) of households are linguistically isolated.

Linguistic Isolation

The Census Bureau defines a “linguistically isolated” household one in which no member 14 years old or older:

  • speaks only English, or
  • speaks English “very well.”

When these conditions are met, all members of the household are tabulated as linguistically isolated, including those individuals that are under 14 years old who speak only English.
