Connecting Communities, Paving Pathways: Shaping Tomorrow's Shared Use Trail Network

For over 45 years, the Thurston Region has invested in the trails network with the goals to  connect to all Thurston County communities and to provide all users a safe and enjoyable recreation and active transportation experience. Trails offer our communities a wide range of benefits including providing sustainable transportation routes, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving individuals’ health, and promoting economic development.

In 2007, TRPC produced the first Thurston Regional Trails Plan to provide guidance and recommendations to local governments to coordinate the expansion and management of the shared use trail network. In December 2023, TRPC completed a major update to the plan. The new plan sets five major goals for the regional trails network to become more:

  • Connected and accessible
  • User-friendly
  • Safe and secure
  • Collaboratively managed
  • Well-maintained
