Decennial Census and American Community Survey Thurston County Data
Overview
Since 1790 the U.S. Census Bureau has conducted a national population count, with the most recent available decennial census being Census 2010. Every household in the country is asked certain basic demographic and housing questions. This data is commonly referred to as the "100%" data and was released in 2001 for the 2000 Census.
In previous decennial censuses, a sample of these households was asked additional more detailed questions. One in six households nationwide received this "long-form" questionnaire. Beginning in 2005, the Census Bureau has asked similar questions from a sample of households, but with two significant changes: 1) the questions are asked all year around, every year; and 2) the sample size is much smaller, about one household in forty to fifty each year. This new sample count is called the American Community Survey (ACS), and contains detailed information about the population (such as education, poverty, migration, commute patterns, income, etc.) is now available every year, instead of just every ten years. ACS tables are updated annually in the Profile, or can be downloaded from the Census website.
2010 Census Data is now available for Thurston County’s Cities, Towns, and Tribal Reservations.

TRPC is in the midst of calibrating our population and housing databases to the 2010 Census data. Once this effort is complete, we will provide customized data requests for population and housing for specific Thurston County geographies such as fire districts, school districts, neighborhoods, or other service areas that are not available from the Census website.
Please check back to this site regularly for more information and updated tables.
If you would like to submit a customized data request, please send it to Veena Tabbutt, Senior Planner.
