In 2001 Thurston Regional Planning Council allocated $500,000 to what became known as the "Bridging the Gap" project. The policy makers' intent was to close the gap in the Chehalis Western Trail system, somehow linking the segment north of Interstate 5 with the segment that terminates south of 12th Avenue. Little more than a concept at that time, "Bridging the Gap" soon captured local, state, and federal interests. In less than 10 years it has become a striking example of what can be accomplished with interjurisdictional coordination and collaboration.
